Microwave components and systems that operate in high-power applications, create very high electric field strengths, especially at edges and field discontinuities. Moisture, contamination or high temperatures promote an electrical breakdown in the form of an electric arc. Iff the energy is so high that an arc is ignited, a large proportion of the microwave energy is reflected, and the arc travels back to the microwave source. Waveguides and sources can suffer significant damage and even be completely destroyed in this way.

We have developed our highly sensitive and fast optical arc detectors specifically to protect your high-power microwave components and systems. Arcs and lowest amounts of light are detected within a few microseconds. The microwave generator can be switched off in good time before excessive energy can build up in the arc. Permanent destruction through burning is prevented.

ARC1 2.0 Arc Detector

One or two eyes wide open

ARC1 2.0, the second generation of our successful ARC1 Arc detector box, combines a fast response time of a few microseconds with an even increased light sensitivity well below 1 Lux. Built into a compact light metal housing with a keypad, the device is now available with either one or two detector channels. The new version with two detector channels was developed specifically for monitoring isolator assemblies (circulator & load) and for coincident arc detection. A global interlock signal is possible by logical OR (standard) or AND (option) combination of both arc signals.

The optional USB interface access enables customer-specific adjustments such as adjustable light sensitivity, adjustable auto-reset time and configuration of the interlock logic (AND/OR) for the two-channel system.

ARC1 is optically connected to the arc viewport of the microwave component to be monitored using a low-loss fiber optic cable. Ordinary FSMA connections serve as optical interfaces.

Our expandable multi-channel system

We have equipped the new generation of our proven multi-channel ARC4 Arc detector system, ARC4 2.0, with the same advanced photodetector stages as the new ARC1 2.0. The modern 19″ housing can be equipped or expanded with up to 16 arc detector modules and 2 system interface modules. The slots of the detector modules can also be filled with our optical test modules. With the latter, it is possible to test the entire optical transmit-receive chain, including fiber optic cable and arc viewport.

What is new is the free programming of the system interface logic for up to 4 independent interlock signals and the programming of parts of the system configuration by using the keypad, the USB interface access or the web browser access.

The USB interface access and LAN web interface options enable customer-specific adjustments such as adjustable light sensitivity, adjustable auto-reset time and configuration of the interlock logic (AND/OR).

ARC4 is optically connected to the arc viewports of the microwave components to be monitored using low-loss fiber optic cables. Ordinary FSMA connections serve as optical interfaces:

Fiber optic cables and ARC viewports

We offer two qualities of fiber optic cables, each assembled with FSMA connectors:

  • an extra low-loss multimode fiber optic cable of type “MFOC-LKS” and
  • a radiation-resistant plastic fiber cable of the “PFOC-SH” type.

Both cable types are available in a range of standard lengths. Custom lengths are available upon request.

Our FSMA interconnector enables the cascading of two cables, e.g. a short PFOC and a long MFOC, if a locally limited radiation-exposed area needs to be bridged.

With our Arc Viewports, we offer you the opportunity to equip or retrofit your microwave components for optical arc detection.
